Chuval are bags made for carrying produce and for storgage in a yurt, tent or house. They are often displayed proudly in rows as hanging decoration. A considerable amount of work goes into weaving them and certain chuval are made as dowry gifts, for instance ala chuval made with silver thread between the 1880s and 1920s. Even larger are hurc, the largest of which can double up as a sleeping bag in the winter! The smaller variety also used as pillows are called plow in Turkish. The weaving and embroidery (zili, çiçim and soumak) on some of these bags is very fine indeed.
